A turtle tale-una storia di tartarughe

The Smiths live in a nice house by the sea and have a lot of pets: they have Beth the cat, Bob the dog, Hunter the hamster and Loise the tortoise. While all the other animals love to play inside the house, Loise always prefers to stay outside and feels very, very lonely. She takes long and slow walks around the garden, she sleeps on the grass and sometimes she looks at the sea, thinking how much she would like to swim. But she is a tortoise, she can only live on land and she will never be as free as a sea turtle.

La famiglia Smiths abita in una bella casa vicino al mare ed ha un sacco di animali: la gatta Beth, il cane Bob, il criceto Hunter e Loise la testuggine. A tutti gli animali piace giocare dentro casa, tranne che a Loise che preferisce stare fuori e si sente molto molto sola. Fa lunghe e lente passeggiate in giardino, dorme sull’erba e qualche volta guarda il mare pensando a quanto le piacerebbe nuotare. Ma Loise è una testuggine, può solo vivere sul terreno e non potrà mai essere libera come una tartaruga marina.

One day, the Smiths come back home with a surprise. They went to the beach and they found a poor turtle, all covered in plastic bags and with oil in her lungs. They put her in an old bathtub in the garden and call her Myrtle the turtle. Myrtle is an adventurer: she was born in the sea and she loves to swim free, exploring every corner of the reef. But she is very scared now: in her last adventure she risked her life and now she is in a place she had never seen, alone and confused.

Un giorno la famiglia Smiths ritorna a casa con una sorpresa. Erano stati in spiaggia e avevano trovato una piccola tartaruga marina, tutta ricoperta di borse di plastica e con dell’olio nei polmoni. La misero in una vecchia vasca da bagno in giardino e la chiamarono Myrtle la tartaruga marina. Myrtle è un’avventuriera: era nata in mare e adora nuotare libera ed esplorare ogni angolo della barriera corallina. Ma adesso ha molta paura: ha rischiato la vita ed ora è in un luogo che non ha mai visto prima, sola e confusa.

Beth the cat is jealous of the new animal, Bob the dog is afraid of the water she lives in and Hunter the hamster doesn’t understand why some animals don’t like living in a comfy and safe cage as he does. The only one Myrtle can talk to is Loise: they are very alike and they spend all day in the garden, together. Loise tells Myrtle about the Smiths, how kind a family they are and how much they love their pets. But she also says that she wishes to go away, by the sea, living an exciting life like Myrtle.

La gatta Beth è gelosa del nuovo animale, il cane Bob ha paura dell’acqua e il criceto Hunter non capisce perché ad alcuni animali non piaccia vivere in un gabbietta comoda e sicura come la sua. L’unica a cui Myrtle può parlare è Loise: si assomigliano molto e trascorrono le giornate in giardino, assieme. Loise parla a Myrtle della famiglia Smiths, di che famiglia gentile sia e di come amino tutti i loro animali. Ma le dice anche che vorrebbe andarsene, in mare e vivere una vita avventurosa come Myrtle

Myrtle tells Loise about all her wonderful adventures, but she also warns her about the dangers that you can find at sea. There are sharks that eat turtles, men that hunt turtles and, even worse, pollution that kills turtles. At the bottom of her heart, Myrtle envies Loise; now that she has seen the land, she wishes to live on it, with a family like the Smiths, and friends like cats, dogs and hamsters. Even if they’re not so nice, they’re still better than sharks.

Myrtle racconta così a Loise di tutte le sue avventure, ma la mette al corrente anche di tutti i pericoli che si possono incontrare in mare. Ci sono gli squali che mangiano le tartarughe, gli uomini che cacciano gli tartarughe e peggio ancora l’inquinamento che uccide le tartarughe. Nel profondo del suo cuore Myrtle invidia Loise; ed ora che ha conosciuto la sua terra vorrebbe viverci, con una famiglia come gli Smiths ed avere come amici i gatti, i cani e i criceti. Anche se non sono così gentili, sono sicuramente meglio degli squali.

Day by day, the two get to know each other and after one month they become best friends. Loise understands how lucky she is to have such an easy life. And even though sometimes it is boring, thanks to Myrtle, now she knows that she must be grateful for it. On the other hand, Myrtle has finally found a real friend. She was never bored at sea but she has never had the time to stop and enjoy things like friendship.

Giorno dopo giorno, le due si conoscono sempre di più e dopo un mese diventano migliori amiche. Loise capisce quanto fortunata sia nel vivere una vita così semplice. Ed anche se qualche volta è noiosa, grazie a Myrtle, ora sa che deve esserne grata. D’altra parte Myrtle ha finalmente trovato una vera amica. Non si era mai annoiata in mare ma non ha mai avuto il tempo di fermarsi e di godere di alcune cose come l’amicizia.

When Myrtle finally recovers, the Smiths decide to put her back in the sea, in a protected area near their house. Loise is very sad, because she will lose her only friend, so she disappears inside her shell and cries all day. Myrtle is sad too, she is afraid she will never find the Smiths’ house again and she will have to live without her best friend. The other animals hate to see Myrtle and Loise so sad; seeing how much they loved each other, they learned a lot too. They now understand that difference can’t influence friendship and so they decide to help.

Quando Myrtle guarisce, la famiglia Smiths decide di rimetterla in mare, in un area protetta vicina alla loro casa. Loise è molto triste, perché ora perderà la sua unica amica. Si nasconde così dentro il suo guscio e piange tutto il giorno. Anche Myrtle è triste, ha paura che non ritroverà più la casa degli Smiths e che dovrà vivere senza la sua migliore amica. Agli altri animali non piace vedere le due così tristi; nell’osservare quanto bene si vogliono imparano a loro volta qualcosa. Capiscono ora che la diversità non può influenzare un’amicizia e vogliono essere di aiuto.

Every Sunday, Bob the dog barks at the sea, so Myrtle will follow the sound to know where the house is. Beth the cat walks with Loise to the beach and Hunter the hamster stays on Loise’s shell so he too can see the world. After all, he has to admit that, like Myrtle says, even outside the cage you can have fun.

Ogni domenica il cane Bob abbia verso il mare, così che Myrtle possa seguire il suono e ritrovare la loro casa. La gatta Beth cammina con Loise alla spiaggia e il criceto Hunter si apposta sul guscio di Loise in modo da poter vedere anche lui il mondo. Alla fine deve ammettere che, come dice Myrtle, ci si può divertire anche fuori da una gabbietta.

So every Sunday, on the beach, a cat, a dog, a hamster, a tortoise and a turtle meet. They talk about their lives, they love their differences and they learn new things every time. They have learnt that friendship has no race or place. But, above all, they have learnt that we all can appreciate our lives, no matter what lives we live, if we have a friend, or more, by our side.

Così che ogni domenica, sulla piaggia, un gatto, un cane, un criceto, una testuggine ed una tartaruga marina si incontrano. Si raccontano delle loro vite, amano le loro diversità e di volta in volta imparano cose nuove. Come ad esempio che l’amicizia non ha razza o luogo. Ma soprattutto hanno imparato che possiamo tutti apprezzare le nostre vite se abbiamo un amico o più amici al nostro fianco, indipendentemente dalla vita che stiamo vivendo.
